GOP Effort Against Labor Nominee Gains Steam
Wednesday | May 8, 2013"Sen. Tim Scott, R-S.C., backed by ranking member Lamar Alexander, R-Tenn., said he planned to object Wednesday afternoon to a generally agreed upon rule that allows committees to meet after the Senate has been in session for more than two hours. As a result, Harkin was forced to reschedule the vote for May 16. Scott, who believes Perez took a heavy hand in his state in enforcing the 1964 Voting Rights Act, would not rule out a filibuster of his nomination. “It seems like there is still a red state bias and the notion of a partisan approach is not necessarily needed at the Department of Labor,” Scott said."… Continue Reading

Funding advances to avoid SRS furloughs
Tuesday | May 7, 2013There is apparently good news for threatened Savannah River Site employees, as the federal funds to avoid furloughs are one step closer to the finish line. More than 2,500 employees have been subject to reduced working hours; however, if these funds are not OK’d by May 22, up to 900 of those employees will lose all working hours. In the Senate, U.S. Sen. Lindsey Graham, R-S.C., sits on the Armed Services Committee. U.S. Sen. Tim Scott, R-S.C., pledged his support to expediting the funds getting to SRS.… Continue Reading

Lawmakers talk port improvements in Charleston
Wednesday | May 1, 2013Most of the nation's harbor deepening projects — including projects in Charleston and Savannah, Ga., — could be paid for if a national harbor trust fund wasn't raided for other purposes, a trio of federal lawmakers said Wednesday. From the House to the Senate
Monday | April 22, 2013When Republican senator Tim Scott addresses an audience, he paces back and forth on the stage. He doesn’t use notes or look at a teleprompter. He punctuates with his hands, pointing his index finger outward or turning his palms upward. He looks and sounds like a revivalist preacher or a motivational speaker. When he asks his audience a question, he expects to hear an answer.… Continue Reading

Sen. Scott shares his inspirational story
Monday | April 15, 2013U.S. Sen. Tim Scott worked his way out of poverty in a single-parent home and grew up to become a successful small businessman and congressman. Scott is the keynote speaker for the "Cherokee Education Liftoff," a special event set for Friday, April 12, at Broad River Electric Co-Op Auditorium. He will discuss how education and hard work can help people move up the economic ladder as part of the official kickoff event for Know(2). Cherokee, Charleston and Marlboro counties were chosen last year to become pilot sites for a Know(2) education initiative developed by the South Carolina Commission on Higher Education. Cherokee County leaders will announce their own vision and goals for education before more than 1,000 invited guests at the Cherokee Education Liftoff. "Scores of folks in the Gaffney area have been working at a truly grassroots level for more than two years on this initiative — and not only do they know exactly what Know(2) is about, but they can't wait for everyone else to find out," Know(2) community leader Oscar Fuller said. "In the months ahead, more information is going to be shared — stoking questions, conversations and interest, all leading up to this event on April 12. The anticipation of it is a big part of the fun — and, it's just what we need to get the whole community engaged in it." … Continue Reading
Scott urges administration to back MOX
Wednesday | April 10, 2013On the eve of the rollout of the Fiscal Year 2014 Budget and a much-rumored cut in funding for the MOX project, a South Carolina senator pushed hard for answers and support from the administration – and it wasn’t Sen. Lindsey Graham. During the confirmation hearings of Energy Secretary nominee Dr. Ernest Moniz, Sen. Tim Scott, R-S.C., repeatedly asked pointed, and weighted questions looking to gauge Moniz’s position on the mixed oxide fuel fabrication facility. Moniz did not take a position, rather stating, if confirmed, he would investigate this as a “high priority.” Moniz, though, was heavily involved in the process which saw the MOX project selected to be the disposition project for 34 metric tons of U.S. plutonium. … Continue Reading

U.S. Sen. Scott praises workers for overcoming disabilities
Monday | March 25, 2013While touring the Walgreens Distribution Center on Monday, U.S. Sen. Tim Scott praised employees he said “have overcome the odds and are maximizing their potential.” About 40 percent of the distribution center’s 500 employees have mental or physical disabilities. Scott sees rosy U.S. future
Friday | March 15, 2013U.S. Sen. Tim Scott, R-S.C., decried President Barack Obama's health care plan, but still painted a rosy picture of America's future during a 15-minute speech Thursday before a major conservative convention. Tim Scott’s Substantive Red Meat
Thursday | March 14, 2013When we’re listing the stars in the Tea Party conservative firmament, we’re quick to name Rand Paul, Ted Cruz, and Mike Lee. There’s a fourth name from the Senate that should start leaping into our minds: Senator Tim Scott of South Carolina. His speech today was one of the best ones at CPAC so far — and remarkably wonky:… Continue Reading
Scott goes back to school
Saturday | March 9, 2013More than three decades ago, Tim Scott was a ninth-grader flunking multiple subjects at Stall High School. Today he's a U.S. senator. And drawing from his own learning experiences as a child raised by a single mother on a low income, he is an ardent advocate for expanded educational opportunities. The senator, like many of his fellow conservatives, remains rightly wary of costly big-government proposals that supposedly will solve America's education woes. But he also knows that better schools represent "a chance for us to change the outcome for America."… Continue Reading
