(WASHINGTON) -- In this week's Republican address, Sen. Tim Scott of South Carolina asks Americans to join him in praying for the victims of the Boston Marathon bombing and their families. "The Boston Marathon bombing has left us all with a heavy heart and we pray for the victims and their families," he says. … Continue Reading

Obama’s Labor Nominee Faces G.O.P. Critics in Senate

Thursday | April 18, 2013

Questioning the role of politics in Mr. Perez’s challenges to voting laws, Senator Tim Scott, Republican of South Carolina, brought up the Justice Department’s move to block that state’s voter identification law in 2011 on the grounds that it would discourage minority voters. “As I look at your management style, it seems to have a political perspective, a political bias in the management style,” Mr. Scott said. “It seems not to be open and not to be balanced and certainly not to be fair.”… Continue Reading

Sen. Scott shares his inspirational story

Monday | April 15, 2013

U.S. Sen. Tim Scott worked his way out of poverty in a single-parent home and grew up to become a successful small businessman and congressman. Scott is the keynote speaker for the "Cherokee Education Liftoff," a special event set for Friday, April 12, at Broad River Electric Co-Op Auditorium. He will discuss how education and hard work can help people move up the economic ladder as part of the official kickoff event for Know(2). Cherokee, Charleston and Marlboro counties were chosen last year to become pilot sites for a Know(2) education initiative developed by the South Carolina Commission on Higher Education. Cherokee County leaders will announce their own vision and goals for education before more than 1,000 invited guests at the Cherokee Education Liftoff. "Scores of folks in the Gaffney area have been working at a truly grassroots level for more than two years on this initiative — and not only do they know exactly what Know(2) is about, but they can't wait for everyone else to find out," Know(2) community leader Oscar Fuller said. "In the months ahead, more information is going to be shared — stoking questions, conversations and interest, all leading up to this event on April 12. The anticipation of it is a big part of the fun — and, it's just what we need to get the whole community engaged in it." … Continue Reading

Scott urges administration to back MOX

Wednesday | April 10, 2013

On the eve of the rollout of the Fiscal Year 2014 Budget and a much-rumored cut in funding for the MOX project, a South Carolina senator pushed hard for answers and support from the administration – and it wasn’t Sen. Lindsey Graham. During the confirmation hearings of Energy Secretary nominee Dr. Ernest Moniz, Sen. Tim Scott, R-S.C., repeatedly asked pointed, and weighted questions looking to gauge Moniz’s position on the mixed oxide fuel fabrication facility. Moniz did not take a position, rather stating, if confirmed, he would investigate this as a “high priority.” Moniz, though, was heavily involved in the process which saw the MOX project selected to be the disposition project for 34 metric tons of U.S. plutonium. … Continue Reading

Scott to SCSU honor students: ‘Excavate the greatness within you’

Wednesday | April 3, 2013

The state’s newest senator said he did not let a journey marked by “bumps and bruises” deter him from finding success and urged South Carolina State University honor students to use the power of their own potential to succeed. “If you want to stand out in life, you have to stand up for someone who cannot stand up for themselves,” U.S. Sen. Tim Scott said. … Continue Reading

U.S. Sen. Scott praises workers for overcoming disabilities

Monday | March 25, 2013

While touring the Walgreens Distribution Center on Monday, U.S. Sen. Tim Scott praised employees he said “have overcome the odds and are maximizing their potential.” About 40 percent of the distribution center’s 500 employees have mental or physical disabilities. Visible from Interstate 85, the cavernous building on Alliance Parkway has an array of features such as work stations that rely heavily on symbols to make tasks easier for these employees to complete.… Continue Reading

Scott sees rosy U.S. future

Friday | March 15, 2013

U.S. Sen. Tim Scott, R-S.C., decried President Barack Obama's health care plan, but still painted a rosy picture of America's future during a 15-minute speech Thursday before a major conservative convention. Scott showed off his increasingly evangelical speaking style, moving out from behind the podium and telling personal stories, including one about his near-fatal car crash in high school.… Continue Reading

Tim Scott’s Substantive Red Meat

Thursday | March 14, 2013

When we’re listing the stars in the Tea Party conservative firmament, we’re quick to name Rand Paul, Ted Cruz, and Mike Lee. There’s a fourth name from the Senate that should start leaping into our minds: Senator Tim Scott of South Carolina. His speech today was one of the best ones at CPAC so far — and remarkably wonky:… Continue Reading

Scott goes back to school

Saturday | March 9, 2013

More than three decades ago, Tim Scott was a ninth-grader flunking multiple subjects at Stall High School. Today he's a U.S. senator. And drawing from his own learning experiences as a child raised by a single mother on a low income, he is an ardent advocate for expanded educational opportunities. The senator, like many of his fellow conservatives, remains rightly wary of costly big-government proposals that supposedly will solve America's education woes. But he also knows that better schools represent "a chance for us to change the outcome for America."… Continue Reading

Senator Scott Sits Down with The State's Editorial Board

Friday | March 1, 2013

Columbia, SC — FOR ANYONE WHO might be wondering, U. S. Sen. Tim Scott does not have horns. I spotted no such devilish details when South Carolina’s newly appointed junior senator visited our editorial board last week. And to their surprise, African-Americans in attendance at one of Mr. Scott’s recent speaking engagements didn’t get a glimpse of horns either. … Continue Reading

U.S. Senator Tim Scott (R-SC) met with commanders and troops at Fort Jackson on Wednesday. Fort Jackson, as the U.S. Army’s main production center for Basic Combat Training, trains 50 percent of the Army’s Basic Combat Training participants and 60 percent of the women entering the Army annually. “It was truly an honor to visit Brigadier General Roberts, Colonel Yackley and the troops stationed at Fort Jackson today,” Scott said in a news release.… Continue Reading

U.S. Sen. Tim Scott gave a rousing motivational talk to hundreds of students at Stall High School in North Charleston on Tuesday, encouraging them to dream even bigger dreams.
