Scott Praises Passage of Bill Approving Trade Agreement to Strengthen Ties with Taiwan, Stand Against Chinese Aggression

WASHINGTON – U.S. Senator Tim Scott (R-S.C.), member of the Senate Finance and Foreign Relations Committees, praised the Senate’s approval of the first trade agreement signed under the U.S.-Taiwan Initiative on 21st Century Trade.

“Bolstering our partnership with Taiwan sends an important message that we value Taiwan’s commitment to freedom and democracy and the United States sees them as a reliable partner in promoting those values across the Indo-Pacific,” Senator Scott said. “This agreement not only strengthens our trade relationship with Taiwan, benefitting American job creators, but stands strong in the face of growing Chinese aggression in the region and around the world.”

The agreement sets rules of the road in five areas of trade: customs administration and trade facilitation, good regulatory practices, services regulation, anti-corruption, and small and medium-sized businesses. This bill approves that agreement—giving it force and durability—and reasserts Congress’ constitutional authority over international trade by requiring that any trade deals with Taiwan be subject to a vote in Congress. This will guarantee more transparency and accountability from the administration moving forward and will ensure that future agreements are in the best interests of the American people.
