Senators Scott, Roberts & Gardner to Sit Together at SOTU in Unified Opposition to President’s Gitmo Plan

WASHINGTON, D.C. -To show strong and unified opposition to the President’s plan to relocate terrorists held at the detention facility at Guantanamo Bay to American communities, U.S. SenatorsTim Scott (R-S.C.),Pat Roberts (R-Kan.), and Cory Gardner (R-Colo.) tonight will sit together at the President’s State of the Union Address. The Administration has surveyed sites in South Carolina, Kansas, and Colorado as potential replacements for Guantanamo.

Senators Roberts, Scott and Gardner have led opposition to the President’s plans to again ignore the law, the will of Congress and the American people and use executive action to move the detainees to the mainland.

In November of 2015, the President signed the National Defense Authorization Act into law which contained language blocking the transfer of detainees to the United States for prosecution or detention.

Senators Roberts, Scott and Gardner are concerned with the 30 percent recidivism rate among released detainees, the hundreds of millions of dollars it will cost to construct a new facility, and the fact that opening domestic facility would place a bright red bulls-eye for acts of terror on an American community.

Also in November of 2015, the Senators hosted a press conference on this issue. To view footage of that press conference, clickhere.
