Charleston was named the best city in the country for veterans transitioning out of the military in a ranking released Nov. 1 by Navy Federal Credit Union.
Charleston scored high because of its existing veterans community, its proximity to a large military base and a VA hospital, a low veterans unemployment rate and a high number of veteran-owned businesses.
Its crime rate and cost of living scored comparatively well to other cities. The city’s cultural scene and proximity to beaches and other quality of life issues also factored in.
“We take pains to try and ensure that they know these are areas where you can reach out and get a lot of help.”
Charleston has also been voted the No. 1 city in the U.S. by Travel + Leisure each of the past 10 years.
