Sen. Tim Scott applauds U.S. Department of Education investment in South Carolina’s HBCUs

WASHINGTON — U.S. Senator Tim Scott (R-S.C.) today applauded the U.S. Department of Education’s announcement of more than $174 million in additional investment for Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs). South Carolina is home to eight of the nation’s HBCUs, and this funding includes nearly $10 million for universities across the state.

“South Carolina’s HBCUs have a long history of preparing generations of successful leaders,” said Sen. Scott. “This investment is a testament to President Trump and Secretary McMahon’s commitment to supporting institutions that advance opportunity and prepare students for success. I will continue to support policies and advocate for resources that strengthen HBCUs, create opportunities, and help more students achieve the American Dream.”

“For nearly 200 years, HBCUs have been engines of opportunity in communities, advancing critical innovations and uplifting local industries across the nation,” said U.S. Secretary of Education Linda McMahon. “This new investment will help ensure these vital institutions have the resources they need to continue delivering world-class education and to prepare students for success in a rapidly evolving economy.”

“HBCUs have helped shape the story of American education, and they will undoubtedly shape the future,” said Under Secretary of Education Nicholas Kent. “These institutions of higher education remain central to our nation’s higher education ecosystem, fueling workforce development, driving economic growth in their communities, and cultivating leaders across sectors including STEM, education, public service, and business.”

South Carolina HBCU investments:

  • Allen University: $949,927
  • Benedict College: $1,490,215
  • Claflin University: $1,566,923
  • Clinton Junior College: $875,090
  • Denmark Technical College: $500,000
  • Morris College: $1,145,827
  • South Carolina State College: $2,422,433
  • Voorhees College: $1,035,521

Background:

Sen. Scott is co-chair of the HBCU Caucus and earlier this year introduced the IGNITE for HBCU Excellence Act, legislation that would establish a federal grant program for investments in infrastructure, research, technology, and workforce development to strengthen HBCUs.
